Leipzig: Walking to the Bach Museum

We walked along the main pedestrian street toward Thomaskirche and the Bach Museum.  The first thing we encountered was this whimsical stature.  It's the artist's view of Communist workmen.

Leipzig seemed to have more than its share of Goths today.  It turned out that there was a Goth convention going on

Somehow one doesn't expect people in Goth regalia to do ordinary things like window-shop and use an ATM.

For the Goths, it see and be seen.

This lion is at least keeping his backside dry.

Now this is truly strange.

Enjoying an ice cream.

They weren't shy about posing for photos.

We were to see Goths all over the city as we walked around.  This is some of the architecture that we were walking past.  The third picture, with all the gilding, isn't a religious structure -- it's a bank.

The Addams family on holiday in Leipzig.

A memorial to Mendelssohn in a small park, with a memorial to Bach not far from it.

From a different angle, we see an interesting juxtaposition of musical styles.

The two memorials were just around the corner from Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church), a Lutheran church long associated with Johann Sebastian Bach, and where Bach is buried.

The interior, looking toward the altar.

More views of the interior, with a stained glass window dedicated to Bach.

Bach's grave, near the altar.

After the church, we visited the Bach Museum and Archive just across the street.  It was a holiday, and the museum would normally be closed.  Earthbound Expeditions got them to open for us, though.  It turns out that photography isn't allowed inside, which I learned after taking a picture of this music manuscript in Bach's hand.

A very interesting and well-done museum.  It's only been open a short time; we were one of the first groups to go through it.

Next door is the "Johann S." restaurant.

Out in the square by the Thomaskirche, a busker was trying to hold the attention of some children.

After the museum, we were on our own for a bit.  I just wandered the area around the church, looking at the people and architecture.  I like the name of this fast food joint, but I didn't try any.

Architectural views that caught my eye.

After enough time for a glass of wine or a beer, we went to the Stasi Museum.
